Background of our Horses

 Our Breeding Goals

We breed horses that are athletic, with trainable, good dispositions so they can be used for work or to show and to be enjoyed. All of our horses are raised on ranches, which means they climb in hills, navigate in and around rocks, squirrel holes, creeks and live amongst other horses, cattle and buffalo. Consequently, they know how to handle themselves in the country. This healthy beginning helps to develop strong bodies and good minds. All of our horses' breeding originates from long-time, established horse breeders from Oregon, Nevada and California. We have sought out this stock for our breeding program because we too want to produce durable, versatile horses...horses that can be used for work on the ranch and that can be taken to town to perform. We are very proud of the horses we have for sale.

The Value of Being Raised at the Stonyford Ranch

Each year our stallion is turned out with a band of hardy Paint and Quarter Horse broodmares on thousands of acres, grazing next to cattle and buffalo. The mares are bred naturally and the foals are born and raised on the Ranch's large acreage, where they travel with the herd until they are weaned as a group. Being raised in this setting provides the foals with the opportunity to learn how to interact with each other, how to climb in hills, walk through creeks and they can run and play in the wide open spaces. The foals are weaned together as a group and remain on large acreage. This positive environment in which they grow helps develop strong bodies and good minds.

Broodmares

Our broodmares can be traced back to the following reputable breeders:  Wright's Quarter Horses,  Diamond Crown Horses and Shamrock Ranch, all long-time reputable breeders of Quarter Horses and/or Paints.

Stallion

Smoke, Sire of Ranch's foals
 Registered Name: Crazy Chex Mate

Our stallion Smoke was bred by Diamond P Ranch in Los Molinos, California, who produces beautiful babies with the talent and temperament to be champions. Smoke's sire is Cutaways Gun Crazy, a gray stallion who was sired by Mr. Gun Smoke out of Starrita Dee Bar by Docs Dee Bar. Smoke's dam, Nunes Chex Mint, is a 1979 Buckskin sired by Bueno Chex out of Nunes' Sundella by Nunes' Sundell.

Our Smoke is broke to ride and has been a great horse for use in all phases of ranch work (roping, branding, doctoring, etc.) and to ride for pleasure. We have not shown him, however, his family's talent can be seen in the successes of many of his siblings:

  • Crazy Skeet Shooter, NWCHA futurity Champion and NCHA Money earner
  • Big Guns, NRHA Money earner, AQHA ROM and World Qualifier in Reining & Working Cowhorse, NCRCHA Jr Reining Champion
  • Gunna Be Crazy, NRCHA Certificate of Ability and 2/3 of the way to Supreme Cow Horse merit award
  • So Crazy, SCCHA High Point Open Horse and Bronze trophy winner
  • Gunsmokes Miss, SCCHA $50,000 Non pro Champion
  • Gun Crazy Skeet, Idaho reined cowhorse futurity 4th place finisher and high scorer in the herd
